Feeding the Spiders, and Myself

I had a small setback last night. I got crickets on the way home from work, and came home and feed all the spiders. I managed to be good all day with my diet, but I ended up eating pizza at 11 PM. Not happy about it, but I didn't go over board, and I am getting right back on track today.

The Zen of Tarantula Keeping

Part of dieting is changing what you eat, but also changing your lifestyle. This podcast, The Zen of Tarantula Keeping, highlights some profound ways that being in-tune with you tarantulas can help make you more mindful of the world around you.

I linked to the YouTube video of the episode, but The Exotic Pet Collective is a podcast. All the episodes are pretty good. Videos of each is on YouTube, but if you prefer podcast they are available on all the podcast platforms.

Day Three Of My Diet

Initially, I wanted to try and post something every day. Well, yesterday was the second day, and I already missed a day. While I did not manage to write something, I did stick to my diet, and that feels pretty good. I even resisted ice cream! Ella had a kindergarten reunion with her teacher and class at an ice cream place, and all I had while there was black Dunkin' coffee.

More Than Just Tarantulas

When I first registered the domain name SpiderByte.org my plan was to use it just for my tarantulas, but now that it is all set up I like it enough to want to use it as my website. I have always wanted to blog, the problem is, anytime I start a blog, I post one or two times then have nothing to write about and let it languish.

Well not this time (yeah right)! At a bare minimum I could post videos and pictures of my tarantulas, but I really would like write more. So, in a attempt to write more, I'm going to try publicly documenting my weight loss here. My oldest daughter is getting married in just over a year and I need to lose weight. I think that a weight loss journal could help me keep on track, keep me motivated, and even push me to do more than I would otherwise.

So, starting today I'm going to document my weight loss. I weighed myself this morning, 271.4 lb! I would like to lose 100 lb in one year.

My before picture.

Maybe I can learn a thing or two from the tarantulas, they go weeks, months, even years without eating. Surely I can eat less.

Eating healthy, exercising, and making changes starts today.

Seven Plus One Equals Eight

My Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens only had seven legs when I got her. I didn't notice until I got home from the reptile expo where I picked her up. I had heard that tarantulas could regrow legs, but I was still bummed. What if it didn't grow back?

In this photo you can see she only has seven legs. Her left side leg 3 is missing. Well after a molt she as regrown the missing leg!

In this one you can see the regrown leg. This photo is from the bottom so it appears on the other side. But the leg is there! Her left side leg 3 is slightly smaller than the others, but it has grown back.

She stayed in her web hammock for several days after the molt. Today is the first time she ventured out to walk around on her new leg.

Fear Not Tarantulas Grand Opening

We just arrived at the grand opening of Fear Not Tarantulas, in Virginia Beach, VA

Nice long line, we ended up waiting about 1 hour to get in

While we waited in line Richard Stewart, from The Tarantula Collective YouTube Channel, came out to talk to people in line, and he gave Ella isopods, super nice guy.

Once we were inside Richard was doing his podcast in the store.

Lots of cool spiders

Mexican Black Widow

Poecilotheria metallica

Monocentropus balfouri communal

Fear Not Tarantulas was awesome. We picked up 2 new tarantulas, Psalmopoeus irminia and Psalmopoeus cambridgei.

The P. irminia is named Seven, she is our 7th tarantula and a gift from Christie for our 7th anniversary.
